Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Color Appointment?

Should you arrive at your color appointment with clean or dirty hair?

This is one of the most common questions I hear behind the chair at Revive Hair & Beauty in Columbus, Georgia. Many clients have been told that dirty hair accepts color better or that they should avoid shampooing for several days before an appointment.

For most professional color services, that simply is not necessary.

In most cases, I prefer you to arrive with reasonably clean, dry hair that is free from heavy product buildup. You do not need to wash it immediately before walking into the salon, but you also do not need several days of oil, dry shampoo, root concealer and styling products sitting on your hair.

Does Dirty Hair Take Color Better?

Dirty hair does not automatically absorb hair color better.

Professional hair color is formulated to work on the hair itself. A large amount of oil or product buildup does not improve the coloring process. In some cases, heavy buildup may make it more difficult to evaluate your natural color, examine the condition of your hair or apply certain products evenly.

The old belief that every color service requires dirty hair may come from the idea that natural scalp oils can provide some comfort during chemical services. While those oils may be helpful in certain situations, extremely dirty hair is rarely necessary.

How Clean Should Your Hair Be Before Coloring?

For most of my color clients, hair that has been washed within the previous one or two days is perfect.

Your hair does not need to feel freshly scrubbed or squeaky clean. It should simply be free from excessive oil and heavy product buildup.

Before your appointment, try to avoid using large amounts of:

  • Dry shampoo
  • Root cover up powder or spray
  • Hairspray
  • Hair oils
  • Texture spray
  • Leave in products that create heavy buildup
  • Temporary color sprays

A small amount of normal styling product is usually not a problem. However, applying several layers of dry shampoo or root concealer right before your appointment may make it harder for your stylist to see and work with your natural regrowth.

Should You Wash Your Hair Before Highlights?

For traditional foil highlights or balayage, arriving with reasonably clean hair is generally appropriate.

Clean hair allows your stylist to evaluate your starting color, texture and condition more clearly. It also helps ensure that excessive product buildup is not sitting between your hair and the lightener.

You usually do not need to shampoo your hair on the morning of your appointment. Washing it the day before is often a good choice unless your stylist gives you different instructions.

What About On Scalp Lightening?

On scalp lightening services may require different preparation.

Your stylist might recommend that you avoid shampooing immediately before the appointment so your natural scalp oils can offer some comfort. However, this does not mean you need to arrive with extremely dirty hair.

More importantly, avoid scratching, aggressively brushing or scrubbing your scalp before an on scalp lightening service. Lightener should not be applied over skin that has been irritated or scratched.

Always follow the specific preparation instructions provided by your colorist.

Should You Wash Your Hair Before Gray Coverage?

You do not need several days of dirty hair for permanent color to cover your gray.

In fact, reasonably clean hair can make it easier for your stylist to see your natural regrowth and formulate your color accurately. Try to avoid coating your roots with dry shampoo or temporary root cover up before the appointment.

If you need to use root concealer between appointments, shampoo it out before coming to the salon whenever possible.

Can Product Buildup Affect Hair Color?

Heavy buildup from dry shampoo, oils, minerals, silicones or styling products can sometimes affect how the hair looks, feels and responds during a color service.

If your hair has significant buildup, your stylist may recommend a clarifying or detoxifying treatment before beginning your color. This is particularly important when preparing for a major transformation or corrective color service.

Do not perform an aggressive clarifying treatment at home immediately before your appointment unless your stylist recommends it. Your colorist may prefer to examine your hair first and select the appropriate treatment.

The Best Way to Prepare for Your Color Appointment

For most color services, I recommend the following:

  1. Wash your hair within a day or two of your appointment.
  2. Arrive with your hair dry unless instructed otherwise.
  3. Avoid heavy dry shampoo, oils and root cover up.
  4. Do not scratch or irritate your scalp.
  5. Tell your stylist about previous professional color, box dye, toners and chemical treatments.
  6. Bring inspiration pictures and be honest about your hair history.
  7. Follow any special instructions your stylist provides.

Different services may require different preparation. When you are unsure, ask your stylist before your appointment instead of relying on general advice from social media.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I color my hair if I washed it the same day?

In many cases, yes. However, freshly scrubbed or irritated skin may be more sensitive during an on scalp color or lightening service. Ask your stylist if your specific service requires different preparation.

How many days should I avoid washing my hair before coloring?

For most services, you do not need to avoid shampooing for several days. Hair washed within the previous one or two days is usually appropriate.

Should my hair be wet or dry for my color appointment?

Unless your stylist tells you otherwise, arrive with dry hair. Certain services may be performed on damp hair, but that decision should be made by your stylist.

Can I use dry shampoo before getting my hair colored?

Try to avoid heavy dry shampoo immediately before your appointment. A small amount may not create a problem, but multiple layers can make it harder to evaluate your roots and work cleanly.

Should I wash out root cover up before my appointment?

Yes, whenever possible. Root powders and temporary color sprays can cover the natural regrowth your stylist needs to examine.
