Should Hair Extensions Hurt After Installation?
Beauty is pain does not apply to hair extensions.
You may be more aware of a fresh installation while you adjust to having additional hair, but persistent pain, strong pulling, stinging or headaches should not simply be ignored.
Hair extensions should provide length and fullness without placing unnecessary stress on your scalp or natural hair.
If your extensions hurt, contact your extension specialist and have the installation checked.
Is Some Awareness Normal After an Extension Installation?
You may notice that your hair feels different immediately after an installation. Additional hair has been added, and you may feel the attachment points more than you will after becoming accustomed to them.
However, there is an important difference between noticing your extensions and experiencing pain.
Warning signs may include:
-
Persistent scalp pain
-
Strong pulling or pinching
-
Stinging or burning
-
Headaches that begin after installation
-
Difficulty sleeping because of discomfort
-
Redness or irritation
-
Crusting, bumps or sores
-
Sections of the scalp appearing raised from tension
-
Attachments that hurt when you move your hair
The American Academy of Dermatology advises that a painful hairstyle is too tight and recommends changing a pulling style immediately when pain, stinging, crusting or scalp “tenting” appears.
Why Might Hair Extensions Hurt?
The Attachments Are Too Tight
An extension foundation should be secure without creating excessive tension.
If the attachments are installed too tightly, the supporting strands and scalp may experience constant pulling. Tight does not automatically mean secure, and discomfort should not be treated as proof of a good installation.
Too Much Weight Was Added
Your natural hair must be able to support the amount of supplemental hair being installed.
Fine, fragile or low-density hair may not safely support the same amount of extension hair as thick, dense hair. Using extensions that are too heavy for the supporting strands may create pulling and increase the risk of breakage.
The Placement Is Not Appropriate
Attachments must be positioned with consideration for your density, growth patterns, haircut and how you normally wear your hair.
Poor placement may cause certain sections to pull when you move, sleep or style your hair.
The Method May Not Suit Your Hair
Not every extension method is appropriate for every client.
Your natural hair density, strand thickness, condition and scalp health should be evaluated before choosing an extension method. Sometimes the safest recommendation is a lighter installation, another method or no extensions until the hair is stronger.
Can Tight Extensions Cause Hair Loss?
Repeated or prolonged tension can contribute to traction alopecia, a form of hair loss caused by pulling on the hair. Extensions and weaves are among the styling practices associated with this condition.
Early warning signs may include:
-
Short broken hairs
-
Thinning near attachment areas
-
A receding hairline
-
Itching or redness
-
Scaling
-
Follicle bumps or pustules
-
Patches of hair loss
Prolonged excessive tension can damage hair follicles, and advanced traction alopecia may become permanent.
A hairstylist can identify visible concerns and remove or adjust an installation, but a stylist cannot diagnose hair loss. If you notice thinning, bald areas, scalp sores, persistent inflammation or worsening symptoms, consult a board-certified dermatologist.
What Should You Do If Your Extensions Hurt?
Do not assume that you must wait several days for significant pain to disappear.
Contact your extension specialist and explain:
-
Where the discomfort is located
-
Whether it feels like pulling, pinching or burning
-
When the pain began
-
Whether certain movements make it worse
-
Whether you see redness, bumps, crusting or sores
-
Whether the discomfort is improving or worsening
Your stylist may need to inspect, loosen, reposition or remove part or all of the installation.
The American Academy of Dermatology specifically recommends removing weaves immediately when they cause pain or scalp irritation.
Do Not Try to Remove Professional Extensions Yourself
Unless your stylist has instructed you otherwise, do not cut, pull or force professional extensions out at home.
Improper removal may cut your natural hair, create additional breakage or worsen tangling around the attachment points.
Arrange a professional evaluation and removal as soon as possible when an installation is causing significant discomfort.
How Should Extensions Be Customized?
A responsible extension plan should consider:
-
Natural hair density
-
Individual strand thickness
-
Existing breakage
-
Scalp condition
-
Desired length and fullness
-
Weight of the extension hair
-
Attachment placement
-
Maintenance schedule
-
Home-care ability
-
Lifestyle and styling habits
More hair is not always better.
The goal is to add enough hair to create the desired result without placing unnecessary weight or tension on your natural strands.
Customized Hair Extensions in Columbus, Georgia
At Revive Hair & Beauty, I customize extension installations around the hair you actually have.
I evaluate your density, condition, strand thickness and goals before recommending a method or amount of hair. I would rather create a lighter installation or recommend another option than compromise the natural hair you are trusting me to protect.
Beautiful extensions should enhance your hair, not hurt your scalp or sacrifice the hair growing underneath them.
If your current extensions are painful, pulling or causing concern, schedule an evaluation instead of waiting for the problem to become worse.
