How to Make Your Expensive Hair Color Last Longer
Alright yโall, we need to talk about something because I know how much money some of you are investing in your hair. ๐๐ฐ
You sit in my chair, we spend hours creating the perfect color, and you leave the salon looking absolutely gorgeous.
Then you go home and wash it every day with whatever shampoo happened to be on sale.
Girl. ๐
I love you, but we have to talk about protecting your investment!
Professional hair color requires proper maintenance. The products you use, how often you shampoo and the amount of heat you apply can all affect how quickly your color fades.
I do not want you loving your color for three days. I want you loving it until I see you again.
Why Does Hair Color Fade?
All artificial hair color eventually fades to some degree, but certain habits can make that happen faster.
Common causes of premature color fading include:
- Washing too frequently
- Using products that are not appropriate for color-treated hair
- Extremely hot shower water
- Excessive heat styling
- Sun exposure
- Chlorine and mineral buildup
- Hard water
- Using strong clarifying products too often
- Dryness, damage and high porosity
- Waiting too long between maintenance appointments
Red, copper and fashion shades are often especially noticeable as they fade. Blonde toners can also shift gradually as the hair is washed and exposed to heat, water and the environment.
Wash Your Hair Less Frequently When Possible
If your scalp, hair type and lifestyle allow it, try extending the time between shampoos.
Every time you shampoo, some temporary color molecules and toner can gradually leave the hair. Washing less often may help maintain the richness and tone of your color.
This does not mean you should walk around with dirty hair. It simply means you may not need to wash it every day.
To extend your style between washes:
- Use a professional dry shampoo when appropriate
- Avoid applying heavy products directly to the scalp
- Sleep with your hair loosely secured
- Use a clean silk or satin pillowcase
- Avoid constantly touching your hair
- Ask your stylist for a routine designed for your scalp and texture
Not everyone can or should follow the same shampoo schedule. Someone who exercises daily may need a different routine from someone with a dry scalp and coarse hair.
Use Professional Products for Color-Treated Hair
Please do not spend hundreds of dollars on professional color and then use products that work against it.
Your shampoo and conditioner should be selected according to your:
- Hair color
- Texture
- Density
- Porosity
- Scalp condition
- Chemical history
- Moisture and repair needs
Your best friendโs favorite shampoo may not be the right product for you.
Blonde hair may need moisture and repair. Fine hair may need lightweight conditioning. Red or copper hair may benefit from color-protecting or color-depositing products recommended by a professional.
This is why I recommend products based on the person sitting in my chair rather than giving every client the same routine.
Wash With Lukewarm Water
Some of yโall take showers hot enough to boil crawfish. ๐๐
I understand because I love a hot shower too. However, extremely hot water can contribute to dryness and may make color appear to fade faster.
Try washing your hair with lukewarm water instead. You do not have to take an ice-cold shower. Simply turn the temperature down when rinsing your hair.
Gentler water temperatures can also feel better on a dry or sensitive scalp.
Always Use Heat Protectant
If you use a blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron or hot brush, heat protectant needs to be part of your routine.
Heat protectant helps reduce the effects of high temperatures, but it does not make your hair indestructible. Tool temperature and technique still matter.
To protect your color and hair:
- Use the lowest effective temperature
- Avoid repeatedly passing over the same section
- Let your hair dry completely before using a flat iron
- Keep the tool moving instead of holding it in one place
- Apply the correct heat protectant for your styling routine
- Give your hair heat-free days when possible
Please stop turning your flat iron all the way up just because it goes that high. ๐ More heat does not automatically mean a better result.
Protect Your Hair From Sun Exposure
Prolonged sun exposure can contribute to fading, dryness and unwanted changes in tone.
If you spend a lot of time outdoors, consider:
- Wearing a hat
- Using hair products with UV-protective benefits
- Applying a leave-in conditioner
- Limiting prolonged direct exposure
- Keeping your hair conditioned and properly hydrated
Reds, coppers, brunettes, fashion colors and professionally toned blondes can all be affected by repeated sun exposure.
Protect Your Hair Before Swimming
Pool water can affect both the appearance and condition of color-treated hair.
Copper and other metals in pool water may create a green cast on blonde or very light hair. Chlorinated water can also leave the hair feeling dry, rough or tangled.
Before swimming:
- Wet your hair thoroughly with clean water.
- Apply an appropriate leave-in conditioner or pre-swim product.
- Wear a swim cap when possible.
- Rinse your hair immediately after leaving the pool.
- Use a swimmerโs or mineral-removing treatment when recommended.
We did not spend all that time creating a beautiful blonde for you to come back looking like Kermit the Frog. ๐๐
Do Not Overuse Clarifying or Purple Shampoo
Clarifying shampoo can be helpful for removing certain types of buildup, but using a strong formula too frequently may leave color-treated hair feeling dry or cause some shades to fade faster.
Purple shampoo is designed to neutralize yellow tones in blonde, gray and silver hair. It does not need to be used at every wash unless your stylist specifically recommends that schedule.
Too much purple pigment can leave porous blonde hair looking dull, smoky or slightly lavender.
Maintenance products should be used according to what your hair actually needs.
You May Not Need More Highlights
When blonde hair begins looking dull or brassy, many clients assume they need another full highlight.
Sometimes the existing highlights are still beautiful. They may simply need:
- A toner or gloss
- Root color
- A face-framing refresh
- A partial highlight
- A mineral-removal treatment
- A conditioning or bond-building treatment
- A haircut and fresh style
I am not going to keep applying lightener to hair that does not need it simply to make the color feel fresh.
Avoiding unnecessary overlap can help reduce dryness and breakage while allowing you to maintain your existing blonde for longer.
Keep Your Hair Healthy Between Appointments
Dry, damaged and overly porous hair may have difficulty holding onto certain colors and toners.
Healthy hair maintenance may include:
- Professional shampoo and conditioner
- Weekly moisturizing treatments
- Bond-building or molecular repair products
- Regular trims
- Gentle brushing and detangling
- Heat protection
- Reduced chemical overlap
- Professional mineral-removal treatments when needed
Products can improve the appearance and manageability of damaged ends, but they cannot permanently repair a true split end. Regular trims help prevent those splits from traveling farther up the strand.
And no, trimming damaged ends is not me trying to steal your length. ๐ I am trying to help you retain it.
Follow the Right Maintenance Schedule
You may not need the same service at every appointment.
Depending on your color, your maintenance plan may alternate between:
- Full highlights
- Partial highlights
- Face-framing highlights
- Root color
- Gray coverage
- Toner or gloss
- Conditioning treatments
- Haircuts
A personalized schedule helps keep your color looking fresh without processing sections that do not need additional chemical work.
