5 Common Hair Myths Your Hairstylist Wants You to Stop Believing

After 16 years behind the chair, I have heard a lot of hair advice.

Some of it is helpful. Some of it is harmless. And some of it makes me want to put down my color brush so we can have a little conversation. 😂

There is so much hair advice on TikTok, Facebook and the internet that it is easy to become confused. Let’s clear up five of the most common hair myths I hear in the salon.

Myth 1: Trimming Your Hair Makes It Grow Faster

Hair grows from follicles in your scalp, not from the ends. Cutting your hair does not make those follicles produce hair more quickly.

However, regular trims may help you retain more of the length you are growing.

When split ends and weakened areas continue breaking, the hair may appear as though it is not growing. Removing damaged ends before the splitting travels farther up the strand can help the hair look fuller and healthier.

Trimming does not change your natural growth rate, but it may reduce the amount of length you lose through breakage.

Myth 2: Purple Shampoo Makes Hair Blonder

Purple shampoo does not lighten your hair.

It deposits purple pigment to help neutralize unwanted yellow tones in blonde, highlighted, gray or silver hair. It cannot bleach your roots, replace a professional toner or correct every type of brassiness.

If your unwanted warmth is orange rather than yellow, purple shampoo may not provide the correction you expect.

Using too much purple shampoo may also leave very light or porous hair looking dull, smoky or slightly lavender. The right frequency depends on your color, porosity and the product you are using.

Ask whether Pureology Strength Cure Blonde Purple Shampoo is appropriate for your hair and how often to use it in your routine.

More purple does not mean more blonde.

Myth 3: A Hair Mask Can Completely Repair Damaged Hair

A good conditioning mask can improve softness, smoothness and manageability. Certain professional repair treatments may also help strengthen compromised hair and improve the way it looks and feels.

However, no mask can permanently fuse a truly split end back together.

If the hair is severely compromised from excessive lightening, chemical processing or heat, improving its condition may require more than one product. Your plan may include:

  • Reducing heat styling

  • Using appropriate shampoo and conditioner

  • Adding moisture or repair treatments

  • Avoiding unnecessary chemical overlap

  • Giving the hair a break from lightener

  • Trimming severely damaged ends

Repair-care options to discuss during your consultation include K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask and REDKEN Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment. The right choice depends on your hair’s condition, and neither replaces trimming truly split or severely damaged ends.

Sometimes the healthiest treatment is a haircut.

Myth 4: Coloring Your Hair Always Damages It

Not every hair color service affects the hair in the same way.

Going darker with an appropriate formula is different from removing several levels of pigment to create platinum blonde. A gloss or toner is not the same service as a full head of lightener.

The effect of a color service depends on factors such as:

  • The condition of your hair

  • Your previous color history

  • The product and formula used

  • The technique and placement

  • Processing time

  • How frequently services overlap

  • Your home-care routine

Chemical services can affect the hair, but that does not mean everyone who colors their hair automatically has severely damaged hair.

Professional evaluation and thoughtful formulation matter.

Myth 5: Expensive Products Are Always Better

The highest price does not automatically make a product the right choice for your hair.

Fine hair may become weighed down by products that work beautifully on thick, coarse hair. Someone experiencing breakage may need a different routine from someone whose main concern is frizz. Color-treated hair, curls and extensions may also require different types of care.

Instead of buying every product recommended on social media, focus on building a simple routine around your actual needs.

That routine may include:

You do not necessarily need a bathroom full of expensive bottles. You need products that serve a purpose in your routine.

How Do You Know What Your Hair Actually Needs?

Pay attention to what your hair is doing.

Does it feel dry, rough or tangled? Is it breaking? Does your scalp become oily quickly? Are your ends thin? Is your blonde turning yellow? Does your hair feel coated or weighed down?

These concerns do not always have the same solution.

A professional consultation can help identify whether your routine needs more moisture, occasional clarification, repair support, less heat, a trim or simply lighter products.
